How should you care for dry hair?

Greasy hair can be a major concern, but dry hair isn't far behind on the list of dreaded hair problems! Dry hair is prone to breakage, dullness, and split ends, so here are our tried-and-true care tips to keep it healthy, properly hydrated, and moisturized.

What causes dry hair?

Dry hair is more fragile and highly porous, so it requires more moisture and deep nourishment. While genetic factors can certainly contribute to dry hair, the condition can be exacerbated by a number of external factors, such as exposure to the sun, dust, wind, or friction caused by wearing hats, caps, and scarves. Paying close attention to your hair care and brushing routine can help prevent these problems.

Tips for caring for and repairing dry hair

Many natural remedies help keep your hair healthy, and some of our favorites are time-honored techniques passed down from our grandmothers—like hair oil treatments! Vegetable oils are the perfect choice for nourishing dry hair, as they are known to improve the quality of the hair shaft. Olive oil, argan oil, almond oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil are among the most popular hair products on store shelves. But if you ask us, castor oil is the standout product that can give your hair a deep boost of nourishment while helping to promote hair growth. However, if your hair tends to get greasy quickly, it’s best to opt for walnut or jojoba oil, which are rich in fatty acids and help restore your hair’s quality.

Another tip we love is applying shea butter from the ends to the roots of your hair, making sure to avoid the scalp. This not only helps provide dry hair with much-needed moisture, but it also adds shine to dull hair. Hair masks can be great additions too: aloe vera masks offer gentle, soothing hydration, while a mask made with egg yolks and olive oil can provide unparalleled shine.

Last but not least, we mustn’t forget the simplest and most affordable method of all: simply washing your hair less often. A dry scalp produces less sebum, which means you don’t need to wash your hair too frequently. In fact, doing so may actually be drying out your hair even more! Spacing out your shampoo days can help support your scalp’s natural sebum production and prevent it from drying out. You could even try a sebum cure over a longer period of time.

Brushing to condition: a natural way to keep dry hair nourished

By now it should be clear that dry hair needs hydration, but it is also often associated with a dry scalp that produces too little sebum. Brushing your hair daily can be the solution to this persistent problem. Using a hairbrush gently massages and stimulates the scalp, helping to encourage oil production. This also helps distribute the sebum produced by the scalp from the roots of your hair down to the ends. Even if you naturally produce less sebum, distributing it throughout your hair can help hydrate each strand and self-regulate moisture, resulting in healthier-looking hair with enhanced shine. But don’t forget that it’s best to choose the right tools for the job, and when it comes to keeping your hair beautiful, our amazing Altesse Studio are the top choice for a reason!
