The secret to detangling your hair?

The secret to detangling your hair?
The secret to detangling your hair?

Your hair type determines everything, from the right hair care products to the right brushing routine. If you have thick hair, you know it requires special care. Brushing and detangling it the right way, with the right brush, will keep it looking healthy and beautiful. We’ll tell you everything you need to know.

Why does hair get tangled?

Before reaching for a brush, it helps to understand why tangles form in the first place. When hair lacks moisture or the cuticle becomes damaged, individual strands are more likely to get caught on one another. Everyday friction, longer hair, curls, and even infrequent brushing can all contribute to knots and tangles.

Effective detangling isn't about forcing your way through knots. It's about working with the hair carefully and methodically to release tangles while minimizing breakage.

Brushing vs. detangling: What's the difference?

At Altesse Studio, we see these two steps as complementary, but they serve different purposes.

  • Detangling is the first step. It removes knots, loosens the hair, and helps reduce tension before styling.

  • Next comes brushing. A boar-bristle brush helps distribute the hair's natural oils from root to tip, enhancing shine and leaving hair looking smoother and healthier.

In other words, a detangling brush prepares the hair, while a boar-bristle brush helps condition, smooth, and enhance its natural beauty.

Why does a high-quality brush make all the difference?

The quality of your brush matters—especially if your hair tangles easily. Bristles that are too stiff can pull and snag, while bristles that are too flexible may not detangle effectively. Altesse Studio brushes combine bio-based nylon bristles with a carefully engineered bristle pattern designed to separate strands with precision and ease, without harsh pulling.

Set on a natural latex cushion, the brush adapts to your movements and conforms more comfortably to the shape of the scalp. The result is a gentler, more comfortable detangling experience that perfectly prepares your hair for your daily brushing routine.

How Do You Detangle Hair Without Causing Breakage?

Technique is just as important as the brush itself. To help protect your hair, always start at the ends and gradually work your way up toward the roots. Work in sections, and never force your way through a stubborn knot. Instead, gently loosen it with your fingers before continuing with the brush.

Hair can be detangled when dry or slightly damp, but avoid detangling soaking wet hair, when the hair shaft is at its most fragile. Once tangles have been removed, the hair is ready for a gentle brushing routine.

In both cases, the detangling brush is the essential first step. A boar bristle care brush then takes over, helping to smooth, condition, and tame the hair.

Detangling without causing damage comes down to technique, patience, and choosing the right tool. By preserving the hair’s natural structure—working from the ends upward—and selecting a brush suited to your hair type, detangling becomes a gentler, more precise ritual and an integral part of the Altesse Studio to healthy, beautiful hair.

What is the best detangling brush for thick hair?

Choosing the right brush for thick hair will help you tame frizz and flyaways, keep knots at bay, and prevent split ends. For thick hair, we recommend using our detangling brush and boar-bristle hairbrush.

The detangling brush

Detangling your hair prevents knots from forming and also helps promote blood circulation in the scalp. To keep your hair healthy and beautiful, it is important to detangle it with a brush suited to your hair type. For thick hair, we recommend using a brush with multiple, flexible nylon bristles arranged at varying heights. This allows for a pain-free detangling experience with little to no breakage.

The detangling brushes from Altesse Collection are made from bio-sourced nylon fibers, interwoven using our unique bristle placement technique. We have specially designed a brush to provide an unparalleled detangling experience for those with thick or curly hair.

The boar bristle hairbrush

With its powerful conditioning benefits, the boar bristle hairbrush can be a valuable addition to your hair care routine if you have thick hair. The keratin in the bristles of this brush is identical to the keratin in human hair, making it the ideal tool for distributing the natural oils from your scalp from the roots to the ends. This helps nourish each strand and prevent your ends from drying out. With each use, your hair will become softer, shinier, and more supple. Moreover, a boar bristle hairbrush smooths out the hair shaft, eliminating frizz and keeping it well-tamed. All while promoting blood circulation in the scalp, encouraging hair regrowth, and removing impurities your hair collects throughout the day!

The boar bristle brushes from the Altesse Collection are of exceptionally high quality, and we offer brushes specially designed for thick or curly hair.

3 techniques for effectively detangling thick hair

  1. Use your detangling brush when your hair is damp or dry. Do not detangle your hair when it is completely wet, as that is when it is most fragile.

  2. Always detangle your hair by starting at the ends and working your way up.

  3. Try to detangle your hair in the evening, before going to bed. That way, you’ll wake up with fewer tangles and avoid a painful brushing session in the morning.
